In the name of God Amen the eight and twentieth day of September 1667 And in the Ninetienth yeare of the Reigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles the Second by ye grace of God, King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland defender of the faith etc ~ I Susanna Harrison of Wapping in the County of Midd[lese]x widdow being at this present time weake and aged in body But of Sound minde and remembrance for which I praise Almighty God But considering the fraillty of all people in this mortall life the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the tyme and hour thereof. And to th(is) end to settle mine estate so as noe diference may arise about the same after my decease doe therefore make and declare this my last will and testament in manner following - That is to say Ffirst and Principally I Recommitt and Recomend my Soule, which is imortall and dyeth not, into the hands of Almighty God my Creator which gave it me hopeing and Stedfastly believing to receave the full and free pardon and remission of all my sinns only by and through the most precious Death and bloodshed of Jesus Christ myne alone saviour and Redeemer. And my body I comend to the Earth to be decently buried according to the good discretion of my Execu[tor] hereafter named. And as touching such worldly estate as itt hath and shall please God to blesse me withall at the time of my decease I give and dispose hereof as followeth. Ffirst I give devise and bequeath unto my kinswoman Susanna Mapson the sume of five hundred pounds of lawfull mony of England to be paid her att such time as she shall attaine unto her full age of one and twenty yeares or day of marriage which shall first happen wot as shee doth marry according to the consent and liking of my Executor. But if said kinswomen xxx Susanna Mapson shall marry contrary to and against my Executors will and consent Then and in such case I onely give and bequeath unto my said kinswoman the sume of three hundred pounds and that shall be her portion not withstanding what I have formerly mencioned. And if it shall happen that my said kinswoman shall dye or depart this Life before shee shall attaine her full age of one and twenty yeares or day of marriage first happening Then I give devise and bequeath out of the Legacy to her given as aforesaid & these Legacyes following. That is to say, first I give and bequeath unto Robert Bourne and John Bourne sonns of Capt. John Bourne, dec[ease]d the sume of one hundred pounds therof to be equally divided betweene them part and part alike. Item, I give and bequeath unto Mrs. Anne Rowly the sume of fifty pounds thereof. Item, I give and bequeath to my Cozens Ffrances, Jone, Willmott and Hester Dunn, children of my brother (Henrie - written in margin) Perry five pounds therof apeece. Item, unto my cozen Knatt (surname) twenty pounds therof to be divided to and amongst her children part and part alike. Item, to my cozen Prudence Martynes Grandchildren I give tenn pounds thereof to bee equally divided betweene them. Item, to Ruth Harding ten pounds thereof. Item, to my cozen Perry at R-------(illegible) to bee equally divided to and amongst her children tenn pounds thereof. Item to my cozen Alice Martyne five pounds therof.

Item, I give and bequeath unto my said kinswoman Susanna Mapson All my P___? Lynnen, pewter, brass and all my andirons and potts, Three Iron (fire) backs, my greate cyprus chest, five chests of ______ and eight sheates, five quilts, one tapestry Coverlet, Five Window cooshins (cushions, Three Ffether bedds , Three bolsters, ix (9) Pillows, To paire of blanketts, Two of my best Ruggs, my beste Chyna Bason and ebony? cane? with silver (top?) five Carpetts, five? suites of the best curtaines and valliand and the _______ , my Best gowne, my Best underpettycoate, my green satyn? Mind that the moneys herein by me given to her my said kinswoman Susana Mapson shall then [be] provided by my Execu[tor] for her best advantage towards her maintenance and education. And as for touching and concerning the rest of myne estate after my funerall charges shall be paid I give & devise and dispose thereof as followeth. Ffirst I give and bequeath unto William Knatt one hundred pounds of lawfull money of England for which sume of one hundred pounds my will and minde is That he shall pay unto his mother the interest therof after the rate of six pounds per annum paid during the terme of her naturall life and for the performance thereof hee shall give bonds to my Execu[tor] att the receipt of his said Legacy. Item, I give and bequeath unto Bridget Baxell wife of [blank] Baxell five pounds of lawfull mony of England and my little Cyprus Chest and the old Rugg. Item, I give and bequeath unto my Cozen Prudence Martyne my deepe Chyna Bason and cover? and to ~~ her two grandchildren Anne and Kathrin twenty shillings apeece. Item, to my said Cozen Richard Perryes [wife – written in margin] tenn pounds of lawfull mony of England to be paid unto her children. Item, I give and bequeath unto Mrs. Bourne late wife of the said Capt. John Bourne, dece[ase]d And unto the said Robert Bourne and John Bourne her sonns the sume of tenn pounds apeece of like money. Item I give devise and bequeath unto the said Robert and John Bourne ~~ equally betweene them All my estate right title and interest of in to and out of one sixteenth part of the good shipp or vessell called the Merchants Delight *1 ~~ whereof the said John Bourne dece[ase]d was Comander. Item, I give and bequeath unto Joseph Banks the sume of five pounds And all my Estate right title & intrest of in to and out of one sixteenth part of the good ship or vessell called The Batchellor whereof the said Joseph Banks is Comander. Item, I give devise and bequeath unto the said Anne Rowly the sume of tenne pounds of lawfull money of England. Item, I give and bequeath unto Francis Harrison the sume of five pounds and to his sonne and daughter I give fifty shillings apeece. Item, I give devise and bequeath unto the said Henry Perry my Brother the sume of five pounds and thereunto the said Frances, Jone, Willmott and Hester Dunn the sume of three [in margin] pounds apeece and to Robert Dunn five pounds of lawfull money of England. Item, I give and bequeath unto Ann Agir fifty shillings of like money. Item, I give to my s[ai]d Cozen Alice Martyne the sume of five pounds of like money. Item, I give and bequeath unto my Cozen Barker fifty shillings for her two children. Item, I give unto William Errington (Exington?] fower (four) pounds of lawfull money of England. Item, I give and bequeath unto Avery Amos [Ames?] my now maide ? servant ten shillings. Item, I give unto the poore [people – written in margin] of the Hambletts of Wapping aforesaid the sume of five pounds of lawfull money of England to bee distributed to and amongst themby the trustees of the said Hambletts – or any eight of them. Item, I do hereby constitute, ordaine and appoint Henry Faucon, Citizen and Draper of London to be the sole and alone Executor of this my last will and testament desireing [him – in margin] to take ye Escrow? Thereof upon him and to perform the same according to my true intent and meaning herein Expressed. Probatum summary: (original in Latin) - Mention is made early on of their location at ‘ Le Strand , County of Middlesex’, and towards the end the name Henrici Faucon appears, and words to the effect that he has been duly sworn to administer……..etcetera .

NOTES:

Susanna Harrison nee Perry was 1st married to James Carter who died 1626 in Virginia.

Susanna Mapson is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. After further research it has been determined that Thomas Mapsonne married Elizabeth Bordder on 28 OCT 1647, Saint Mary Aldermary, London. Susanna Mapson married John Wooley 15 May 1670 at St Dunstan, Stepney, London. Her father died in 1660 and it appears she may have been an orphan at the time this will was written in 1667.

In the will of John Perry of London who died 1628 at Perry’s Point, Virginia he mentions his cousin Elizabeth Bourder. It is possible that this Elizabeth is the mother of Susanna Mapson with Thomas Mapson being her 2nd husband. John Perry (d.1628) was a brother to “cousin Richard” mentioned in the will and a 1st cousin of Henry Perry and Susanna Harrison, author of this will. The conclusion would be that Susanna Mapson is likely the neice of Susanna Harrison and daughter of her sister Elizabeth Perry/Bourder/Mapson.

This is unconfirmed but quite probable.

PROBLEM:

Looking at the dates – according to the IGI Henrici Perry of Buckland was supposedly baptised ca. 1565-67. If Susannah is the sister of that Henry of Buckland Monachorum then he must be 100 years old at the time this will was written. The names of Henry’s daughters correspond with those of Henry of Monachorum (who married Richarda Platyr) except for Hester Dunn - unless Hestor is a variant of Elizabeth. However they would also all be over well over 60 if not over 70 and all still living and unmarried except Hester? Very strange! Either the whole family enjoyed great longevity or someone has the dates wrong.
